On Fri Jun 13th, 9:30am – 2pm, HDSB students will participate in the 27th annual Special Athletes’ Track Meet at Craig Kielburger Secondary School, 1151 Ferguson Drive, Milton. The event includes 50m/100m/400m races, softball and beanbag throw, slalom – wheelchair or ambulatory (non-wheelchair), long jump – wheelchair (independent) or ambulatory, precision throw beanbag, precision Bocce, T-ball, traditional Bocce and Frisbee.

This year, more than 200 athletes with physical and developmental challenges are expected to participate compared to the 12 athletes who participated in the first year of operation in 1987. Coaches, school staff and home school peers, friends, family members and volunteers provide support and encouragement.

This year, the Optimist Clubs of Burlington, Oakville, Halton Hills, and Milton will be donating and serving hot dogs and hamburgers, juice/water, and freezies at the end of the meet. As a member of the Optimist Club of Burlington, I look forward to a great day serving families.

HDSB Capital Projects

In 2013, the HDSB capital budget was $60million. Following considerable inquiry from trustees, the Director developed a new procedure, HDSB Administrative Procedure Capital Projects (Construction Protocol). The new procedure calls for a summative Report on projects to go to the Board following 8-10 months of the operations of the new school. This Report is to include a financial update comparing the original budget to the actual expenditures, changes made and deficiencies. In addition, it will report on the functionality of the building generated through consultations with all those who occupy it.

This new Admin Procedure will be used in June 2014 to review the construction of Milton’s Irma Coulson Public School, which opened to students in September 2013. It is hoped that by formalizing this review, all future capital projects will benefit.

Internet Filtering Feedback

I have asked for the Internet Filtering vote to be postponed to the Jun 4th Board meeting. Anyone wishing to delegate must email GortmakerG@hdsb.ca before noon Tue May 27th to hold a place to delegate. Written materials must be emailed to GortmakerG@hdsb.ca by noon Thu May 29th. Please see Delegating Trustees for a complete explanation of the rules. If you need any help with your delegation, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

THANK YOU very much to everyone for providing HDSB trustees with 43 pages of Internet Filtering Feedback. Your responses contain many diverse, well thought out opinions. I really appreciate your engagement. Background information on the issue of filtering at Halton schools can be found here: Internet Filter – yes or no?

Responses are divided into four categories. Unfortunately, although many of our staff are also parents of our students, they could not click off more than one category:

  • parent/guardian
  • staff member
  • student
  • other (those who did not identify their category)

Trustees will read all the input and reflect upon it. We welcome your opinion right up until this issue returns to the Board table for a vote on Jun 4th. Please feel free to comment on this blog, or if you prefer to be anonymous, call or email me or your Trustee
